Wellbeing

At Ourimbah Public School, we promote student wellbeing by implementing practices that encourage social, emotional, behavioural, and intellectual engagement, while nurturing positive relationships within our entire school community. The responsibility for supporting student wellbeing is shared by all staff members so that every student can thrive at school and in daily life.

Our School Leadership Team, including the principal, leads wellbeing initiatives in collaboration with specialist support staff to ensure the school environment is welcoming, inclusive, and accessible for every student.

The Positive Behaviour Team works closely with students and staff to coordinate 'Operation Oreo', a wellbeing program grounded in our school values and rules: Be safe, respectful, and responsible learners. Named after our school mascot, Oreo the magpie, Operation Oreo is explicitly taught daily across the school to reinforce positive behaviour expectations and wellbeing. Students earn tokens that highlight the current focus rule or value.

A key element underpinning Operation Oreo and our whole-school approach to student wellbeing is the consistent implementation of effective classroom and playground management strategies, as detailed in the School Behaviour Support and Management Plan.

These strategies are essential for creating a safe, supportive learning environment and fostering positive relationships. Research affirms the strong link between effective behaviour management, improved academic outcomes, and the wellbeing of both teachers and students.

While prioritising prevention and positive behaviour support, it is equally important that teachers respond consistently and fairly to inappropriate or unwanted behaviours through logical and predictable consequences. To facilitate this, the School Leadership Team has collaborated with the Learning and Support Team to develop tailored classroom and playground behaviour guides. These guides include a range of interventions and consequences designed to correct and re-teach undesired behaviours, ensuring a coherent and supportive approach throughout the school.
